Editorial Standards

Every publication that reviews products should have a document like this one. Most don't, because the absence of one is easier to exploit. This page is meant to be the opposite — a set of rules specific enough that I can be held accountable to them, and public enough that you can check.

Nothing here is aspirational. If a rule appears on this page, it is in force. When a rule changes, the version number at the top of this document increases, the date updates, and a note in the changelog at the bottom explains what changed and why.

Jeff's Reviews is an independent publication owned and operated by one person, writing under the first name Jeff. There is no parent company. There are no investors. There is no editorial board. The site is self-funded through affiliate commissions earned when readers purchase products through links on this site, and through voluntary reader subscriptions via the newsletter.

The operation is small by design. Scaling a review site typically means hiring writers who have not tested the products, which compromises every principle this site exists to uphold. Until a model exists that preserves first-person testing at scale, the site stays at one reviewer.

This site reviews consumer products across categories including gadgets, fitness gear, software, supplements, home and kitchen, and personal care. Coverage is selected based on three criteria, in order: (1) reader interest expressed through search, email, or subscriber polling; (2) products I would genuinely consider buying; (3) products where a rigorous independent review is not already available.

This site does not review:

• Prescription medications, medical devices requiring physician supervision, or any product whose use is gated by a licensed professional
• Firearms, ammunition, or defensive weapons
• Securities, cryptocurrencies, or financial products
• Content platforms whose review would require creating accounts that violate their terms of service
• Products from companies that have threatened legal action to suppress prior negative coverage
• Products whose manufacturer, country of origin, or ingredient list cannot be independently verified

This list will expand as needed. Removals from this list require a public explanation in the changelog.

Every review receives an overall score on a 1-to-10 scale, expressed to one decimal place. The scale is used across its full range. The following is the precise meaning of each band:

Sub-ratings are independent of the overall score and each other. A product can receive a high Quality sub-rating and a low Value sub-rating in the same review. The four sub-ratings are:

• Effectiveness — Does it do the thing it claims to do, in the conditions a normal person would use it?
• Value — Is the price justified by what the product delivers, relative to alternatives?
• Quality — Is it built well? Will it last? Does the brand stand behind it?
• Ease of Use — Does using it feel like a normal part of life, or does it demand constant attention?

The overall score is not a mathematical average of the sub-ratings. The overall score reflects the answer to one question: "Would I recommend this to a specific person for whom it is well-suited?" Sub-ratings help you weight the answer for your own situation.

The publisher of this site owns no equity in any company whose products are reviewed here. The publisher holds no paid advisory roles, no consulting engagements, and no sponsored ambassadorships with any brand covered on this site.

Affiliate relationships are disclosed in full at /disclosure. An affiliate commission is earned when a reader purchases a product through a link on this site. Affiliate commissions are disclosed within every review that contains them, in the banner at the top of the page.

The following creates a conflict of interest under this site's rules:

• Receiving a free product for review, at any time, from the manufacturer or a third party acting on their behalf
• Being paid, directly or indirectly, to produce coverage of a product
• Being offered a higher affiliate commission rate contingent on a specific review outcome
• Any personal relationship with the manufacturer, its executives, or its public relations representatives that could reasonably be expected to influence the review

If any of these conditions exist for a given product, one of two things happens: the review is not published, or the conflict is disclosed prominently at the top of the review before any other content. There is no third option.

The full methodology is documented at /how-i-review. The summary version:

• Every product is purchased at its retail price, from the same sources available to readers
• No press samples, PR units, or advance access are accepted
• Testing duration is determined by the product category and continues until a confident verdict is possible
• Where objective measurement is possible, it is performed and documented
• A structured "strongest case against" exercise is performed before any review is finalized
• Reviews are updated when material changes to the product become known

Every claim in a review that could be verified independently must be verifiable. Specifically:

• Numeric claims (weights, dimensions, battery life, tested results) must be sourced, either from the publisher's own measurement or from a cited external test
• Ingredient lists, spec sheets, and product specifications are confirmed against the manufacturer's current official documentation
• Claims about the manufacturer, its ownership, or its history are sourced to corporate filings, news reporting, or direct communication with the company
• Historical claims about a product's development, reformulation, or recall history are sourced or removed

If a fact cannot be sourced, it is not published. Where uncertainty exists, the review says so explicitly — "the manufacturer did not respond to questions about X" is a legitimate and frequently-used line on this site.

Corrections are governed by this policy:

What counts as a correction. Any factual error in a review — including incorrect specifications, misstated prices at time of publication, misattributed quotes, or inaccurate claims about ingredients, dimensions, or performance — is a correction.

How corrections are published. When a correction is made, the affected text is updated, and a dated entry is added to the public correction log at /corrections documenting:

• The original, incorrect text
• The corrected text
• The date of correction
• The source that prompted the correction, where possible

What is not a correction. A difference of opinion between the reviewer and a reader, the manufacturer, or another publication is not a correction. A request by the manufacturer to soften a negative review is not a correction. A change in the product after publication is handled as an update, not a correction.

Updates. When a product materially changes after publication — reformulation, price change greater than 15%, acquisition of the manufacturer, discontinuation — the review is updated with a dated changelog entry at the bottom of the review. If the update changes the overall score by more than 1.0 points, a banner at the top of the review notes the change.

Takedowns. No review is ever removed from the site in response to a request from the manufacturer, its representatives, or any commercial party. Reviews may be removed only in the following circumstances: (a) the product is discontinued and the review is no longer useful to readers (archived with a notice, not deleted); (b) the review contains a factual error so severe that correction is insufficient (rewritten with a prominent note); (c) a valid court order.

This site is written by a person. The policies regarding AI tools are as follows:

• Prohibited: AI generation of review content, AI fabrication of testing experience, AI generation of product photography misrepresented as original, AI-generated quotes attributed to the reviewer or to real people, AI-generated testimonials
• Permitted as editorial tools: AI for spellcheck and grammar assistance, AI for research summarization of cited sources (with independent verification of the facts), AI for brainstorming questions to ask during testing, AI for generating alt text for product photos

Every published review reflects the direct, first-person experience of the reviewer. If this policy changes, the change will be disclosed here and in the version note at the top of this document.

Full privacy policy is at /privacy. The summary version:

• The site uses privacy-respecting analytics that do not identify individual readers
• Newsletter subscribers opt in explicitly and can unsubscribe from every email with one click
• No reader data is sold, rented, or shared with third parties for marketing purposes
• Affiliate link clicks are tracked only for the purpose of measuring which products readers find interesting, not for building profiles of individual readers

There is no external body enforcing these standards. The accountability structure of this site operates on three levels:

• Self-enforcement. Every review is produced under these standards. Every correction is logged publicly. Every version change to this document is noted.
• Reader enforcement. Readers who identify a violation of these standards in any review, or in any content on this site, are encouraged to email jeff@jeffsreviews.com. Valid complaints are addressed in the corrections log.
• Public record. The entire history of this site — its reviews, its corrections, its changes to this document — is public, searchable, and archived by the Internet Archive. Nothing published on this site is deleted or quietly altered in a way that would make past versions unverifiable.

The only lasting reputation a review site can build is the one readers verify for themselves. This document exists to make that verification possible.

This document is versioned. Material changes — those that affect what content is published, how products are selected, how corrections are handled, or how commercial relationships are disclosed — require a version number increase, a new last-updated date, and a changelog entry at the bottom of this page explaining what changed and why.

Non-material changes (typographical corrections, phrasing improvements that do not alter meaning) do not require a version bump but are noted in the changelog.

Nothing here should be surprising. Most of it is what a reader already expects from a publication that takes itself seriously. The point is that it's written down.
