Sin City takes place in Basin City, a very corrupt and wild place where not only does sin run rampant but the powerful heroes live. Sin City is a five part film with two of the parts being a continuation of the same story all of which follow the same good guy bad guy theme.
The good guys in Sin City are not necessary always the will not kill super heroes but they all follow the same ethical standards of looking out for the small people of the city. Basin City is plagued by not only corrupt government and police but by mobsters and gangs so you have a very good background to understand the main characters in the stories.
The first story is a quick tale of a woman who hired a man to kill her because she could not get away from a mobster boyfriend when she tried to break off the relationship. This segment is quick and a bit hard to follow; most of the explanation for it comes with the commentary after the film.
The next story is the two part one starring Bruce Willis as a good cop, John Hartigan, who is tired of the corruption and goes to rescue a little girl kidnapped by a Senator’s son. When Hartigan rescues the girl his own partner shoots him in the back for killing the kidnapper who was going to rape the girl and torture her.
The third story starts with Marv, Mickey Rourke, lying in bed with the dead body of Goldie, killed in the night without disturbing Marv. He wakes and waits for the cops to show up, seeing the setup he is involved in and dealing with the cops to escape.
In his search to find out who killed his sudden girlfriend Marv finds a super natural creature named Kevin, played by Elijah Wood. He ends up killing Kevin and finds out that a cardinal is also in the story and has helped Kevin kill prostitutes so they could eat them.
The Big Fat Kill follows Dwight, Clive Owen, as he kills a group of men led by an undercover detective after the cop beats his ex girlfriend. Dwight follows the group after they leave the girlfriends apartment to a part of town where the prostitutes are in charge and packing.
The girls kill the group of men and Dwight finds out the leader is a detective and offers to bury the bodies in the local tar pits. He winds up getting shot by mercenaries at the tar pit who were called by one of the prostitutes for money and they end up fighting to get back the leader of the prostitutes.
That Yellow Bastard part 2 continues the story of Hartigan recovering from his wounds in a hospital to have Senator Roarke tell him that he will be framed for his son’s crimes. Hartigan ends up beating Roarke and talking about ending corruption in Basin City to his girlfriend Nancy but knows this is only wishful thinking.
Sin City used a unique film style that creates a comic book looking film and along with the continuous narration by characters gives a real comic book or graphic novel feel. The film is pretty good and if you enjoy comic books or graphic novels will more than likely appeal to you but may not be liked by some.
I did not care much for the film but it does have its unique style and is a cult classic but was made with a few main faults. While the films look and feel is well done the constant narration is a bit overdone and starts to grate after the first few minutes.
Continuing through the film the constant talk by the main characters leaves you to feel that they are trying to justify their actions to the audience when they really go overboard with it. Sin City is pretty good but the films constant talk and character narration is annoying to me but does follow in the graphic novel style.
Sin City does contain plenty of extras but if you didn’t like the film the extras don’t really mean all that much which continue the gore and narration of the film. The Blu-ray edition contains an uncut edition of the film that is about 20 minutes longer with plenty of other bonus features.
The theatrical release contains two audio commentaries, a picture in picture commentary and an audience reaction during the film. The second disc contains the uncut version, several making of features and an hour long feature from director Robert Rodriquez about the film and graphic novel.
The bonus content all revolves around the film and graphic novel including its novel style and unique filming that does add a good visual appeal to the film. The high definition film looks very good and the visual appeal of the filming style adds to the films entertainment value.
The films use of shadows not being dark or black but more of a silvery luminescence and the colors used to highlight events make an interesting and appealing look to the film. The high definition visuals and sound add even more to the film and make it look very good for some good entertainment.
Sin City does a good job of telling some short stories in a unique comic book style that makes for a good entertaining time in a film. The stories are fairly easy to follow except for the first one and they did a good job for the most part with the film.
Sin City is a pretty good film and with all the extras that the Blu-ray version contains is certainly worth getting for any fans of the film. The Blu-ray edition does contain enough extras to make this a fans dream even if they own the original film on DVD.
