If you have never heard of MythBusters they are Adam Savage and Jamie Hyneman who have over 30 years of special effects experience in the movie industry.
You may have noticed I have changed the rating system starting with this show and will continue this in the future. This rating will be for DVD’s & Blu-rays for the types of shows that the show itself is the bonus material like documentaries and educational shows.
MythBusters is so much more than those two guys though; a whole team or producers, researchers and even interns help solve these dilemmas of both modern and past myths. These myths are really like urban legends as well as things people just want to see the MythBusters look into like popular movie stunts or things people have heard of.
Joining the Discovery Channel shows both Adam and Jamie continue to search for facts behind popular urban legends and myths in season 2. They are helped by interns who work sometimes harder than Adam and Jamie, or so it seems, in building various parts of the machines and objects used to confirm or bust the myths.
Myths are put forward by fans as well as ones that any of the show’s producers, interns or Adam and Jamie have heard of and want to check out. Popular myths of season 2 include skunk cleaning methods, beating a radar detector and blowing up a car by shooting its gas tank.
Adam and Jamie start by explaining their myth and come up with ways to test the myths and how they are going to search out the truth behind the myth. Common shows go like this, Adam and Jamie discuss the myth such as common ways people think they can beat a radar gun.
The interns are then given their tasks such as researching the popular ways that people think you can actually get away with speeding past a police officer’s radar gun. The group heads to a location or sometimes stays at home in the M5 warehouse that Adam and Jamie have used in the past for their special effects work.
They always get expert help when appropriate and use some common sense ways to protect themselves along with a stern warning at the beginning of each show that they are professionals, don’t try this at home. Help often comes in the way of police, firefighters just in case, and other officials to ensure the safety of the shows employees and the public in general.
Other help also includes several local merchants and other businesses some of whom have worked with Adam and Jamie in the past as well as like the bit of advertising being on the show generates. Sometimes myths they are looking into require even bigger help like going to a power plant, an old ship turned museum or other location where they are always welcomed, at least on the first visit.
After delving into each myth they often come up with unexpected results and discuss these so that no stone is left unturned when it comes to various aspects of each topic. Then they usually blow something up just for the fun of it, often the show involves some really cool destruction in some form or another just for a little extra bang for your buck.
In season 2 they revisit myths they had previously busted or found to be true and they have a great time with the gold painting myth with painting a full human body from the James Bond film Goldfinger. They also spend some time looking at new myths and working very hard to clear the air about them one way or another.
Another interesting aspect of the show is the mythterns or interns of MythBusters and the people who are attracted to this type of work, lucky so and so’s. The show occasionally hires new people who work with the two main MythBusters Jamie and Adam but throughout the three seasons I have received two MythBusters, Kari and Tory, are in all three seasons.
Jamie and Adam have extensive experience with special effects and are well educated and smart individuals so they do know what they are doing, mostly. The show also has a slew of producers and researchers but the others are squarely in front of the cameras during the show are mostly Jamie. Adam, Kari, Tory and the interns.
This is the first of three reviews of the MythBusters seasons I have received from the Discovery channel but not the first Mythbusters shows I have seen. A few of the shows I saw when I was staying in a hotel a couple of years ago and I am still enthralled by the shows and will be purchasing the rest of the seasons.
MythBusters is such a cool show and you really only need to see one episode to know what I mean, this is science at its most exciting. Mythbusters takes not only myths that you may have heard of like shooting gas tanks to see if they explode or stuffing fruits and vegetables inside car tailpipes to see what happens but tries them out.
While some of the episodes may not be the most scientifically asked questions many put real physics and science to the test. They always do things with safety in mind, for the most part, as well as using that science along with math and much more to prove things or attempt to.
Like many shows I was hoping that Season 2 of Mythbusters would really start to get to the good stuff and the stars of the show would really get into their roles and start to become comfortable. That is exactly what has happened and the show is really impressive from the start of the season with plenty of fact finding tours through some pretty common and some not so well heard of myths.
Not having seen season one yet I can only hope that it is as good as the three seasons that I have received but only time will tell, I’m just waiting for my tax refund. I know that season 2, 3 and 5 are well worth purchasing and that the show really does a great job of using science to explore myths.
MythBusters is a kid friendly show and does a great job of showing how science and math, among other topics, basically many fields of education are worthwhile. MythBusters really shows how smart people and ones with the resources can find the truth about the world we live in through experimentation and the use of the scientific method.
I highly recommend MythBusters for a real life look at how science can debunk or prove things that are sometimes commonly held beliefs. MythBusters season 2 on DVD is a great show and well worth the purchase for family friendly entertainment that is fantastic.
