Razer Mako

Razer has come up with a great audio experience in the Mako and has done this in conjunction with THX, yes, the George Lucas company that made its first appearance back with the original Star Wars. The 2.1 downward firing speakers and bass subwoofer works well but for the price you do get what you pay for, a great sounding audio system.

The sound is great and the speakers work well, there is no denying that the speakers are probably the best I have heard and definitely the best looking that have graced my makeshift desk. The system sounds wonderful for both music and gaming as well as watching my favorite episodes of Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis.

The Mako system comes with the two satellite speakers and the main subwoofer, the control pod as well as the generous amount of cabling. The control pod has a regular VGA connection that connects to the subwoofer and the two satellite speakers use Cat 5 cabling to connect them to the subwoofer.

This choice is a bit confusing for me but there is no problem with using them or getting them confused with your regular connections when working with your system, they are the only ones that will be black. The cabling is fine but I am not sure I really like the Cat 5 cables and how easily they want to roll back up into a small loop like when they got shipped. I have enough of a problem with cabling and having these loops of Cat 5 cabling curling around the back of my monitor doesn’t make things neater.

I have other complaints about the system as well, the 16.5 pound subwoofer would be the next and the fact that the system takes up so much space on my desk would be about the same thing. The subwoofer is large and very heavy and the system is supposed to sit with at least six inches of space between the satellite speakers and anything else as well as 3 inches from the edge of your desk. This takes up a lot of real estate from things like drives, monitors and other things that are also kind of important for my computer system.
